7 years The beginning
My first years seemed normal: I climbed trees, rode bikes, ran barefoot until my feet turned black, and nurtured a curiosity that would persist throughout my journeys. I began learning that home was built through relationships and experiences, not houses.
2 years Learning impermanence
My most vivid memory is of snow. The winter wonderland brought the excitement of a new experience - but the snow melted away, and I felt I was the snow.
1 year Finding joy in change
I despise cardboard boxes, but moving boxes and a grassy hill became a sled in the middle of July. A childlike joy returned with the realization that moving could hold unexpected benefits.
1 year Learning to be different
I tried to fit in by playing football at recess and adopting new lingo, but I was ostracized. Resentment faded into an understanding that it was okay to be different - and that travel was giving me a wider perspective.
1 year Growing into change
Each new start built my fortitude, and moving became easier as I matured. Instead of reminiscing on what was lost, I looked forward to new experiences.
1 year Adventure out west
Our longest move crossed almost two thousand miles, and my trepidation changed to euphoria. I skied across mountaintops, hiked waterfalls, and explored countless national parks.
2 years Connection without geography
When quarantine struck, my only friends were hundreds of miles away, so I started programming to bond with new friends and stay connected with the ones I had left behind. I discovered that I wasn't limited by geography.
3 years The sequence comes together
I realized that I'm not eight disparate people; each move added a unique aspect to a beautiful whole. I've become curious, tenacious, and creative.
3 years Carnegie Mellon
My sequence isn't finished, and my intrepid travels have only just begun.
